Today the American Film Institute revealed its top 10 films of the year, with a special award for Roma since it wasn’t eligible to be among the top 10 (it’s a foreign language film):

    BLACKKKLANSMAN

    BLACK PANTHER

    EIGHTH GRADE

    IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

    THE FAVOURITE

    FIRST REFORMED

    GREEN BOOK

    MARY POPPINS RETURNS

    A QUIET PLACE

    A STAR IS BORN

Stuff like this makes me think that we might finally get a small Best Picture lineup.

I think maybe for the win it doesn’t stand a chance, since I don’t think there’s ever been a BP winner that wasn’t one of the AFI top 10 films of the year. But it can definitely still be nominated for BP. The AFI top 10 usually only coincides with maybe 5 or 6 BP nominees.

I predict 7 of those 11 (special award winner Roma is the 11th) will get BP nominations, leaving 1-3 spots left. BlacKKKlansman, The Favourite, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, Roma and A Star Is Born will all get Oscar BP nominations (maybe Black Panther, but maybe not).

The four movies that NEEDED to be on this list are, so I’m happy with it (BlacKKKlansman, BP, A Quiet Place, ASIB). The rest? Flotsam and jetsam.

The Departed and Slumdog Millionaire both were completely shut out by AFI, so history isn’t completely against Vice, but it’s still not good for its BP chances

    A Quiet Place is coming…

This has me kind of curious. It has performed strongly so far this awards season, better than a number of other films people are predicting, and having Blunt out there for “Mary Poppins Returns” also keeps “A Quiet Place” front of mind. Krasinski is also doing a fair share of campaigning as well, and if we are to believe Chris Beachum’s post in the Golden Globes thread, the movie was very well-received by the HFPA. Unfortunately, I’m not sure I see it cracking through any above-the-line categories. Blunt seems likelier for “Poppins” at this point in time, and Supporting Actress is pretty crowded. Screenplay seems possible, but is probably somewhere just outside the top 5. At the very least, the love the film is getting could help its chances in the sound categories, where it seems most likely to show up and can absolutely contend for a win.

Is The Favourite an American film or a British film? For some reason I was thinking it was a British film.

According to Wikipedia The Favourite’s country of origin is listed as Ireland, United Kingdom and the United States. I assume the latter is the reason it made it in to their top ten films list.

Not necessarily but I think we can be pretty sure First Man is.

Wasn’t Slumdog Millionaire a British production and therefore ineligible? The Departed missing is more significant, especially as it was released in October of that year so they had plenty of time to see it. Late-breaking major contenders have sometimes missed here, like Avatar and The Revenant – though weirdly, they still managed to nominate Silence while being one of the first to announce, and it still got snubbed everywhere else.

All in all, this group is very random.
